FAVRE MAY NOT GET HIS OWN STREET IN GREEN BAY

(AP) - The three-time Most Valuable Player of the National
Football League may not get a Green Bay street named after him
after all. The City Council decided on a 7-5 vote Tuesday night
to send the proposal to rename part of a street as "Brett Favre
Pass" back to committee. The action came after critics said
streets should be named after former government officials,
prominent business leaders or war veterans -- preferably after
they are deceased.

"It's not a good idea to name a street after a living person,"
Alderman Eugene Schmitz said. "I'm not saying he's not a great
football player. But what if he commits a crime?" Others
disagreed. "I cannot understand these objections," Alderwoman
Darlene Marcelle said. "Brett Favre has given a lot to Green Bay
and the area. The work he does alone for the Boys & Girls Club
shows that." Alderman Guy Zima recommended sending the issue back
to the Plan Commission and said the city needs to set a stricter
street-naming policy. "We're setting precedents where we'll have
a hard time turning anyone away," he said.
