Your being extremist in your analysis of what I think, IMO. One can simply look at the days volume. How much of the days volume was illusionary? How many of the sell were to other MM's? Was there buying on the bid?
If the volume was heavy due to MM's selling to eachother, then IMO, they are attempting to shake shares on behalf of a large short position and , yes, they have accomplices who work these threads who aid them in that task.
If the volume reflects that 'no' , all the buys were on the ask and the buys vs. sells is legitimate...then the MM's have made and honest Market.
I do not know if some members of the NASD and the SEC are 'on the take', I believe the SEC is tightening the reigns on the abusive practices of the MM's, yet, the NASD are brokers regulating brokers, therefore, tho' they might not be crooked, they may be sympathetic to the MM's.
