Yes, but there was no legacy PC software that MSFT had to contend with. Moreover, the development they did was the core of what was put into PCs, so it was just a matter of going their separate ways. Anyone attempting to supplant MSFT today would have the MSFT legacy, not to mention the FUD factor that MSFT emanates. Perhaps the only way to even have a chance to have any new competition with MSFT in the area of OSes is in new technologies that do not have to contend with the legacy PC software, which is embedded systems, Network terminals (Windows terminals, NCS, etc.), set-top boxes, etc.
