The misconception that Microsoft isn't innovative may have been your conclusion. Look at PC mag Java reviews from a couple months back and you'll find Microsoft's Java support in IE gets the Editor's Choice award and described as "fastest, most compatible". IE 3 & 4 won kudos in all reviews I've ever seen.

Who provided automatic and persistent install of sandboxed classes? ActiveX controls? Who provided replaceable script engines? Integrated shell support? Who invented and released the first permission based security model for Java? Who supported Java controls that could play equally well in all COM enabled applications, all through the ActiveX component model? Who shipped server side transaction support for Java before Enterprise Beans was even a complete spec? Who invented asp pages? Who was the first to provide digitally signed web content? Who first supported the PICS rating system in their browser? Who first implemented the W3C defined CSS stylesheets? etc...
