Zeuspaul,

Thanks for the detailed account of your objectives. I now see why you're interested in peak performance and dual processors! Wow, that's some setup you're contemplating there--definately would fall into what I was considering the "specialty" category. And of course you are right that in your case, dual processors would be a small percentage of overall system cost.

I'm simply ignorant on whether dual processors would cause a problem with dual booting, but I certainly see no reason that it would.

One other advantage to sticking to your tried-and-true dos apps: I bet the stability is hard to beat.

Many apologies to Networm for butchering his name! I'm quite embarrassed about this.

I'll look forward to hearing more updates as you proceed.

Regards and good luck,

Dave

This term reserved RAM is a new one for me. Out of curiosity what does reserved RAM mean?

Maybe you can get a motherboard with several gigabytes of RAM. According to Kenneth's Tech page: the Intel Road Map, home1.swipnet.se, you will be able to in the third quarter of this year.

Here is what Kenneth reports:
Make 450NX MB
Availabilty Q3 98
Description 4 processor motherboard supporting up to 8GB of RAM, and HotPlug PCI.

This motherboard is intended for use in servers and will cost kilobucks.

Zeuspaul,
Choosing a mother board is like choosing a wife. You don't really know if your getting the right one but you know your sure stuck with it/her after the ceremony! I called someone who said I had a normal AT board from my description. I went to pricewatch.com (cookieville!, they set at least 6 or seven cookies) and there are just to many too choose from. I could get a 200 MHz MMX at those prices. A new system would run me more than upgrading. I need a HD, mother board and chip, cooling fan, a new power supply?, and a little memory. The SCSI scanner would not come with a new system so I can't count that.

MB & chip 275.00
HD 160.00
fan 14.00
power sup 30.00
memory 100.00

579.00

Well maybe I could just about get a new system for close to the same money with newer features too. What do you think?
