I think the original use of medium was the compound construction: "the news media". Later the modifier "news" was dropped. At least that's the way I remember it. But I agree with your formulation.

One example of a naturalized use of "medium" is when applied to fortune tellers. Several of those people are "mediums". Fowler also gives "stadiums" and "asylums" as other examples, although I personally wouldn't notice if I read "stadia" or "asyla".
