thanks denni. Here is an e-mail I just sent to Gateway:

Subject: company comments in re Microsoft today

''We don't have a choice,'' an executive of Gateway 2000 Inc. (GTW - news) told the government.

"[Gateway 'executive James] Von Holle has testified that if there were
competition to Windows he believed such competition 'would drive prices lower' and promote innovation." CNN

I'm very very disappointed with Gateway's disingenuous remarks. That from a company that refuses to even offer as an option or standard Corel's WP Suite, and refuses to even offer as an option or standard Netscape's browser, when in fact we find today that Microsoft does not restrict them from doing so. Quantex Microsystems offers Corel WP Suite on both their laptop line and on a multimedia desktop line. Hewlett Packard preinstalls Netscape Navigator as the default browser on some models, as also does I believe Packard Bell. Microsoft gives OEMs 80% of the screen space to the vendor OEMs to do with as they wish.

But Gateway offers nothing but Microsoft's office suite and browser, then says, ''We don't have a choice". What hypocrites.

Now I acknowledge that this exec was referring to the choice of
uninstalling IE. But I don't believe it's the right of the vendor to
exclude things that Microsoft wants included. It doesn't hurt the end user to have a built-in browser from Microsoft. Gateway is a hypocritical company which has done nothing except help Microsoft, by exclusively selling only Microsoft products, at the expense of Microsoft's competitors.

I have no affiliation whatsoever to Microsoft, but I sure do enjoy what
Microsoft has created with Win95, and I hope to enjoy Win98. I also love Corel WP Suite, and guess what? I wanted to order a laptop from Gateway last week, but I didn't because you didn't offer Corel WP Suite as even an option. I ordered the laptop from Quantex, because they offer Corel WP Suite, which I like and enjoy and know how to use. And you people are saying you have no choice? You're hypocrites who are falling on your own sword. I have always admired Gateway, but I've been wondering why you don't offer any competing Suite products with your systems. Only Microsoft. Now today your executives whine and complain and try to suck up to the DOJ. Pathetic.
