5:48PM EDTcopy from CHICAGO TRIBUNE may 18 1998 While the concept of phone competition may elude the average resident who has no real alternative to AMERITECH , it's a different story for business customers with multiple lines who find dozens of companies seeking their business. Phone competition has proven to be a boon for the companies that make telecommunications equipment, such as TELLABS INC. which finds that deregulation is pushing demand for new products through the roof. As a result, the phone infrastructure business is starting to look almost like consumer electronics. We used to take four years to bring out a new technology platform. said ROB PULLEN, TELLABS vice-president of engineering and marketing, but now we're down to two years, and we need to get down to six months. He said the new infrastructure makes data transmission quicker and more reliable, at least for business customers; changes for consumers will follow. It may take five to ten years, but these things will migrate from business users to consumers.
