Mohan: I used the wrong word as an umbrella for much more complicated motives. My main point, with which you seem to agree, was of course independent of any country. As the saying goes there is no dress rehearsal in life, and history is contingent on events of the past.

Sincerely, Seppo

Mohan, <is to dismiss all the legitimate reasons behind the action.>

Pray, tell what could these "legitimate" reasons be?

I think the tests were good for two reasons:

1) Shows independent resolve on the part of the Indian government to defend its borders.

2) Reminds those who would become complacent about nuclear weapons that the capacity to make them and use them is spreading.

These two benefits were accomplished without the shedding of blood. They contribute first to stability of the region and second to a heightened awareness of the growing nuclear 'family' in other parts of the world.
