-Universal Edge 9000 Demonstrated at 1998 SUPERCOMM Show-

ATLANTA, May 19 /PRNewswire/ - The transition of the telecommunications network toward Internet-based data access today makes a quantum leap forward. Nortel (Northern Telecom) today announces the Universal Edge 9000--its new global high-speed access platform for the 21st century. This integrated, multi-service platform furthers Nortel's commitment to provide evolutionary ''plug and play'' products that offer new high-speed data services without wholesale network changes, that remain compatible with existing dialtone networks, and use existing transport infrastructures. The Universal Edge 9000 combines data, voice, and multimedia services for mission-critical PSTN and IP networks.

Nortel's Universal Edge 9000, is the first member of Nortel's Universal Edge portfolio, delivers ''voice over any medium''--including Voice over IP and Voice over ATM. The technology is a key building block towards providing more flexible and cost-effective telecommunications services and seamlessly transitioning all services to a universal data network. Additionally, the Universal Edge expands Nortel's webtone data portfolio by offering fast, reliable, secure data access--with the same mission-critical performance standards employed in the existing telecommunication network. Nortel will demonstrate the Universal Edge 9000 at SUPERCOMM '98, June 7-9 (Booth 7549).

The Universal Edge 9000 illustrates its versatility by seamlessly integrating into central office and remote environments--for Nortel's AccessNode and DMS platforms. It can also be used for applications where data-only services are needed and is the optimal vehicle for delivering high-speed data services such as videoconferencing, virtual private networking, high-speed Internet access, and transparent LAN services.

''The beauty of Nortel's Universal Edge portfolio is that it is equally appealing to both ILECs and CLECs,'' said Ian Craig, president, Broadband Networks, Nortel. ''It flexibly caters to service providers who are looking to deliver applications based on universal, mission-critical IP networks and new entrants with business plans to start with low-cost, traditional POTS.''

The Universal Edge 9000 will be available for trials later this year. It will help accelerate service deployment at the network's edge and ease transition in the local services marketplace by providing new levels of data and voice integration. The Universal Edge 9000 has FlexSlots that allow any service in any slot, via ServiceModules. Voice and data are integrated onto a ServiceModule, reducing network rewiring, lowering operating costs, and speeding DSL deployment.

''With high-density, multi-circuit ServiceModules, and support for high-speed DSL services, including Nortel's 1-Meg Modem, our new access offering is well positioned to meet the needs of our customers looking to evolve their networks,'' said Clarence Chandran, president, Public Carrier Networks, Nortel.

The Universal Edge will offer providers a competitive business edge by making value-added services possible from any FlexSlot using a variety of ServiceModules. The ability to support these services--such as web caching, advanced voice adaptation, telephony/Internet gateways, and H.3xx servers--is built into the Universal Edge architecture.

The Universal Edge 9000 has a dual backplane design and supports any loop technology--including full-rate ADSL and ADSL-Lite, VDSL, 1-Meg Modem, and POTS. Nortel's Universal Edge supports a variety of North American standard switch interfaces--including TR-08 and GR-303--with an ETSI-ready architecture. Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) functions are performed by Nortel's Integrated Network Management (INM) Broadband platform and are also supported by other management platforms, such as SNMP.
