Novell gains ahead of earnings report
NEW YORK, May 19 (Reuters) - Shares in Novell Inc., the Utah-based software company, rose Tuesday as Wall Street appeared to bet the company will meet expectations when it reports earnings after Thursday's close.
Novell was up 5/16 at 11-3/16 on the Nasdaq after brushing a new 52-week high at 11-3/8. It was among the 10 most actively traded stocks in the over-the-counter market.

First Call Corp. expects Novell to earn $0.04 per share in the fiscal second quarter ended April 30. The company lost $0.04 per share in the same quarter last year, and earned $0.04 in its first fiscal quarter.

''There has been speculation that the company is turning itself around, but that has not been evident yet, it may become evident with the earnings,'' said Sanjiv Hingorani, software analyst at Furman Selz.

Novell only returned a profit in its first quarter by cutting costs while revenues were below expectations, Hingorani said.

Novell's stock has recovered sharply from this year's low when it closed at 6-14/16 on Jan. 28, but is still well below the high of 15-6/16 in May 1996.

The company said last year that its strategy is to move beyond its historic dominance of the client/server-based local area network and into the emerging future in which personal computers connect to the wider Internet without regard to whether the connection is local or on the other side of the globe.
