Arrow ... the IBM punch cards were just an extension of the teletype paper tape that was in common use on the military side of things in those days. Visually reading paper punch tape was part of the job, so when I started doing Fortrand on IBM 29 key punch I could read the holes easily. The major problem with their patent was that the card hole code was well established.
