Sorry about all these newbie questions, but the more posts I read from this board, the more I realize how little I understand about the way INCY's business works. I get that they license genetic databases and research tools. I get that they have methods of mapping genes that far outstrip the competition. So they know stuff about genes in humans, bacteria, lab animals, and other critters that will take other companies years to figure out. I understand that such information is very valuable.

I don't get all the discussion about patents on gene sequences (ESTs?). How is it possible to patent a gene sequence? Sorry for being so dense....
