True, there used to be many more HDD manufacturers but the fewer companies left today are much larger. The only large company I remember going under was Miniscribe. HP also had a short era of HDD's. I remember the periods of oversupply followed by periods of allocation (Short supply). The 15% to 18% annual growth rate they talk about is not straight line.

The company going under in this cycle is Micropolis. Their business will hardly be noticed when distributed among the remaining manufacturers. I belive driving force for disk drives will be the sales of new computers. I also believe new computer sales are driven by computer replacements when their disk drives are short capacity. The deterioration of performance is gradual as higher performance becomes the norm. The shortage of disk space is sudden and can not be tolerated for long.
