Cisco up on DJL comments about market share

SAN FRANCISCO, May 19 (Reuters) - Shares of Cisco Systems Inc. jumped after a Donaldson Lufkin Jenrette analyst made positive comments about the networking giant gaining market share in local area network switching, traders said.

DLJ analyst Stephen Koffler was not available for comment. But traders said that Koffler said networking market research firm, the Dell'Oro Group, came out with a survey of local area networking switching, which indicated further gains by Cisco.

Pam Dell'Oro, founder of the Dell'Oro Group in Portola Valley, Calif. said her survey showed Cisco had 45 percent of the total Ethernet switching market in the first quarter.

In the fourth quarter of 1997, Cisco had a 37 percent share of the total Ethernet switching market, Dell'Oro said. The total Ethernet switching market is the largest component of local area network switches.

Cisco shares were up two to 79-3/4 in very active trading. DLJ is maintaining its buy rating on Cisco, traders said.

Officials at Cisco in San Jose, Calif. were not immediately available for comment.

Cheers,
