Thanks Rich, I knew that the Merced was a bit over the horizon and was going to come in expensive, but I didn't know it was going to be that expensive. So we can glean from your report that the bus speed increase and Rambus technology are the only NEW fish in Intel's pan for 1999? ---------- On A Different Note ----------- I've been doing a little information gathering to clarify the current effect on prices due to the inventory glut. I couldn't find the All-in-One Macintosh in the Apple Store. It was in the Education Store, but alas, no prices there. My conclusion is that there is still a broad range of prices across the span of product offerings on both the Macintosh and Wintel side that are correlational with performance and feature sets. It appears that while one can get a really cheap Compaq, to buy one would be the equivalent of spending 1998 money on 1996 technology. Two years is a long time in the computer industry. In the $1600 to $2100 price range Macintosh has a CONSIDERABLE LEAD on performance, features and price over the Compaq offerings! This is one message that needs to be shouted by Apple as consumers line up with the mistaken impression that Apple is more expensive.
