TORONTO, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Manchester Securities Corp. (''Manchester''), a New York based investment firm, announced today that it is proposing an alternate slate of seven directors for Dayton Mining Corporation (Amex: DAY - news; ''Dayton'') at the upcoming annual general meeting of the shareholders of Dayton to be held on Wednesday, June 17, 1998 and will be soliciting proxies to be voted for those nominees.

An information circular containing further details of the proposal for a new slate of directors of Dayton and accompanying form of proxy have been mailed to all shareholders of Dayton.

The proposed nominees of Manchester are:

-- William Myckatyn, a mining consultant and former President and CEO of
Princeton Mining Corporation and former President and CEO of Gibraltar
Mines

-- Catherine McLeod-Seltzer, President of Pacific Rim Mining Corp. and
former President and CEO of Arequipa Resources Ltd.

-- James Askew, President of International Mining and Finance Corporation
and former President of Golden Shamrock Mines, Ltd.

-- David Fagin, Chairman of Western Exploration and Development, Ltd.,
former Chairman of Golden Star Resources, Ltd. and former President and
CEO of Homestake Mining Company [NYSE:HM - news]

-- Paul Blythe, a mining consultant and former President and CEO of
Compania Minera Gibraltar Limitada

-- Douglas Donald, an independent financial advisor who until 1996 was
Vice-President and Manager of Scudder, Stevens & Clark Gold Fund

-- Herman Wilton-Siegel, a securities and mining lawyer with the firm of
Tory Tory DesLauriers & Binnington in Toronto

Manchester and certain other entities acting with Manchester (Elliott Associates, L.P. and Westgate International, L.P.) beneficially own 9.71% of the outstanding common shares of Dayton. The common shares of Dayton are listed on The Toronto Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange.
