Mark and others:

I caught Mandl on power lunch today, and I must admit he was less than impressive. Gave no revenue targets for the future, other than alluding to the fact that the analysts were pretty positive on his stock and they have had no trouble placing debt.

The word "profits" was laughed at and pushed aside as if it were a bad joke. He said virtually nothing about the advantages (or lack thereof) of wireless communication vs. fiber and other installed technologies.

And when Bill Griffith asked about "voice over IP" and other competing technologies for local voice traffic, Mandl merely admitted that he thought lots of niches would exist in the future.

All in all, a lousy performance. I would say that Winstar came out smelling like a rose, at least in terms of competitive pressure from other wireless CLECS. But overall, I think Mandl made the entire sector look less than attractive with his superficial discussions, and makes me feel more and more comfortable with my July 50 short.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
JC
