One concern I have is that the robotics part of things
could become commoditized very quickly once some
standard library interfaces start to emerge.

For example:

Microsoft's NTMS (NT Media Services) can provide a
common interface for all library devices on NT. With
that standard, storage management software vendors
could write generictape library management software
that works with any tape library.

Other initiatives such as I20 will also add to this trend
toward commodity tape library hardware in the UNIX
space--though probably not as quickly.
