China, Canada Renew Telecom Cooperation Agreement May 20, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China and Canada renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on telecommunications in Beijing on May 18. The intention is to build on industrial cooperation initiatives in the sector under the guidelines of the 1988 MOU.

The renewed MOU allows closer cooperation in three areas: standards and certification, policy and regulatory issues and technical exchanges in telecommunications and information technologies.

The MOU was signed by Wu Jichuan, Chinese Minister of Information Industry and visiting Canadian Industry Minister John Manley, on behalf of the two countries.

Chinese and Canadian companies present at the ceremony signed three contracts valued at more than US$9 million.

These included the exchange of technologies on radio conference equipment, a flood-alarm network and a microwave system.
