All of the various word-twisting on this thread aside, you never bothered to answer why, if the OEMs have it so bad... why they've been willing to put up with these "unfair" deails for so longe... it's probably just that the OEMs are doing very well, thanks.

No one here has pointed out any other viable consumer OS, other than the Mac. I've seen Macs and I don't want one. I'd much sooner run Linux.

Let's face it: Windows 98 is the greatest consumer OS of all time.

No other consumer product even comes close to the integration of OS/WEB.

Everyone will be shopping through the web in a few years... you bet your bottom dollar the web is part of the OS!!

If you want to compete, why not offer something other than a 3rd-rate java engine (Sun), or 2nd-rate browser (Netscape)?
