Jim, your very angst ridden post inspires this. My wife is, and has been, honked off at "The Press" for about 2 years. Her anger has increased on an almost monthly basis. I, ever the Berkeley Liberal, have patiently counseled the virtues of a free press, and how even if these folks go to extremes it is better than the alternative which is Stalin, Marxism, Leninsim, the whole typical blather. Well, I still believe that BUT THIS SHIT IS STARTING TO MAKE ME WONDER. It seems to me that coupled with the fundamental right of a free press must be some corresponding pledge from that instiution to do something more than sell newspapers/sound bites--nothing less than a pledge for a pledge, integrity for integrity. It is so frigging beyond obvious that the Republicans want to nail the Democrats cuz November is just around the corner and cuz nothing else has worked, that the prospect of a delicious story of how slick willie sold the chicoms MIRV technology just to get re-elected via their campaign contributions and by implication Bernie gets taken along for the ride. Well hell, if we have to "suffer" a free press in order to enjoy its (unargued) benefits, not to mention its absolutely irreplaceable antidote to tyranny, then is it not reasonable to ask that that press adhere to equally high standards of integrity in return? The New York Times needs to stand for something that The National Q does not. Yes, let them both exist for sure, but the tragedy of this affair is the Times--what a sad commentary on a former jewel. However absurd, it reminds me of Latrell Sprewell as the poster boy of the downfall of the modern American athlete. Christ almighty, this is the New York Times! Anybody remember when athletes were on the Wheaties Breakfast of Champions box? Care to name a few who have not (a) fathered one or more kids out of wedlock (b) not strangled their coach (c) honored a contract signed within the last 48 hours (d) been arrested for: substance abuse, wife beating, felony assault on girl friends or anybody 'fortunate' enough to have been in the same bar with them, ..... Apologies for the rant: Jim you made me do it :) The issue is NOT if you are a 'died in the wool conservative' or if I went to Cal in the '60's and am a died in the wool Liberal. Forget that nomenclature crap. The issue is doing the right thing which means not character assasinating someone you know is innocent in order to pursue your own ends. The issue is telling the truth based on the evidence available and what you know, or should know, is a reasonably likely scenario. Said it before, will say it again: if Bernard Schwartz is a traitor for personal/corporate gain, then I will honest to god start believing in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the location of Jimmy Hoffa. Normal humor to resume tomorrow, but sometimes you have to just stand up and say: stop this. This is a lie. This is prejudice. This is hatred. This is without foundation. There are people's lives at stake here, at least in the sense of the honor associated with those lives and that is almost to say the very foundation of those lives, if not to say it. I don't give a tinker's damn if Bernie is Jewish, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Martian, or none of the above. The fact is that he is being deprived of his human and constitutional rights--he is guilty by smear campaign, nothing more and nothing less. Here's my pledge: not one more post about this absurdity until "they" wind up with video of Bernie handing the 'goods' to the 'bad guys' or some other absolutely incontrovertible evidence. Till then, Schartz On and I'll buy every god damned LOR share offered @25 or less, subject to my Visa Card limits. Mike Doyle
