Clarence is upgrading from a mac. I do not think he has any video cards. I am with you on a nice card but why the voodoo? Isn't that just for 3D? His purpose is a trading machine.

How about a Matrox Millenium 4 MB card $130?

Clarence, are your intentions a dedicated trading machine or do you plan on using the machine for other applications?

You need to add in a floppy and CDROM drive. Some kind of backup solution is also in order. I like the LS120 as it is downward compatible to the floppy. I would probably add it in addition to a floppy as a floppy drive is only about $30. I think LS120 is a bit over $100. (you would only be able to backup critical files with this solution)

Networm

Thanks for excellent comments... I'll be checking the earlier posts you mentioned....

How is SDRAM determined to be 'truly PC100'? Is there a certification of some sort?
Haven't looked into monitors yet but Relisys and Viewsonic are offered at JC Computer. I'll have to do research.

Video cards available from this vendor include:
MISC:
1MB/2MB Trident 9680 PCI $30/$37
4MB Trident 9750 AGP $57
2MB/4MB S3 Virge DX PCI $45/$57

DIAMOND:
2MB/4MB Stealth 3D Pro 2000 PCI $55/$67
4MB Stealth 3D 4000 AGP $67
4MB Viper V330 AGP/PCI $100/$100

MATROX:
4MB Mystique 220 3D PCI $80
4MB/8MB Productiva G100 AGP $83/$95
4MB Millenium II PCI/AGP $130/$130
8MB Millenium II PCI/AGP $190/$200

Would you suggest the Millenium? Use PCI or AGP? 4MB enough or spring for 8MB?

As far as MB goes, Abit is also available. Asus sounds too risky....... any preferences here, Networm?

Thanks for your help, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. I really appreciate your comments.

Clarence

Asus ..Gigabyte..mobos..reliability issues

Asus MBs seem to run a pretty wide gamut from excellent quality to poor/fair. Seems they don't have good QE/QC. So its hit or miss with them. You either get a good one or a bum.

Someone on Tom's site agrees...Indicates that Gigabyte mobos are more reliable.

Hello there!

I'm just trying to help somebody based on my experience. We've been selling hunderds of Asus 34 Speeds in PC's and there were NO reports of vibrations, the opposite is true and they are fast!

Asus motherboards? They may be fast but they are not as reliable as they were three or four years ago. We have in fact stop selling Asus mainboards because the mainboards that needed repair were at a level of 8-10% (compared to Gigabyte less than 1%!).

You recommend Pioneer? Well, the error correction of that CD-ROM player isn't very good, in fact it is awful and it surely is not as speedy as the Asus. And stop shouting at anybody who just might have another opinion than you. Your making a fool of yourself for nothing.
Next time, do me a small favour and don't reply at all.<<
