By Andy Santoni and Stephen Lawson May 16, 1998 SAN MATEO (05/16/98) - IT managers will see increasing performance from workstations and servers based on Intel CPUs in the coming months as Intel speeds up data-clogged arteries all around its processors. But early adopters of the technologies will pay dearly. Systems based on Pentium II Xeon processors, due next quarter, will be enhanced by core logic chip sets that support multiple processors and prodigious quantities of main memory. For example, the 450NX server chip set supports four processors, a 64-bit PCI bus, and 8G bytes of DRAM; the 440GX workstation chip set handles two CPUs and 2G bytes of DRAM, sources said. Performance enhancements expected through 1999 include boosting the system bus again, this time from 100MHz to 133MHz or more, and doubling the speed and width of the internal PCI bus. Graphics will also get a boost with 4x Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) support, doubling the current AGP standard, and memory speeds will advance as Direct Rambus DRAM replaces synchronous DRAM.
