Q&A with Michael Miller in PC Magazine:

Q) How fast will new versions or standards of DVD arrive? Is it safe to buy now?<Picture>

A ) Just as was the case with CD-ROM drives, I expect you'll see new and faster DVD drives all the time. But you're safe today if you get a second-generation DVD drive, one that support CD-R and all the backwards-compatible standards. Such a drive should be able to run all the DVD titles. (Remember: even today, most CD-ROM-based games are designed for a 2X drive, while most drives on the market are 12X to 24X.) Also note that for peak performance, you'll want hardware support for MPEG and AC-3 audio, not "software decode," which some vendors offer.
