CIENTIFIC-ATLANTA EXPANDS CABLE'S VIDEO-ON-DEMAND
OPTIONS WITH

Concurrent's Server Solution

-- Scientific-Atlanta announces Concurrent as video-on-demand server

vendor, reinforcing S-A's commitment to support a range of
video-on-

demand solutions --

-- Concurrent's MediaHawk video server system provides scalable
performance for true video-on-demand service --

ATLANTA, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Scientific-Atlanta announced today
a non- binding letter of intent with Concurrent Computer Corporation to
collaborate in developing and deploying a commercially-viable,
integrated, digital video- on-demand system for cable operators in
1998. Working with multiple video-on- demand server vendors,
Scientific-Atlanta plans to support a range of video- on-demand
solutions to meet specific cable operator requirements.

"By combining Scientific-Atlanta's leadership in two-way, interactive digital cable systems
with the low cost and high technical performance of Concurrent servers, we plan to give
cable operators another strong choice for implementing true video-on-demand," said
Michael Harney, Scientific-Atlanta's vice president and general manager of digital video
systems.

The alliance will combine the MediaHawk server with Scientific-Atlanta's standards-based
Explorer(R) 2000 advanced digital set-tops and interactive network to enable consumers to
access the server instantly, 24 hours a day. The letter of intent is subject to a definitive
agreement.

Concurrent provides high-performance real-time computer systems and software for
commercial and government markets. To address its strategic focus on interactive
video-on-demand, the company offers MediaHawk(TM) servers that store libraries of movies,
documentaries, and other videos for immediate access. The MediaHawk server can easily
scale to support more than 1,000 MPEG2 digital video streams delivered to subscribers.

In contrast to proposed video-on-demand-like offerings of other companies,
Scientific-Atlanta's OpenCable-based integrated digital system has the robust network
performance and set-top power to offer "true" video-on-demand. This means the consumer
has immediate access to a library of movies, and can use rewind, fast forward, and pause
features at any time during the video event.

"It's also critical that the digital video-on-demand system can scale to support a large
number of subscribers," Harney added. "The type of digital interactive systems we're
shipping this year have the standards-based software and control systems to support digital
video-on-demand reliably as customer demand grows."

"The MediaHawk server is an excellent fit with Scientific-Atlanta's two- way digital network,"
said E. Courtney Siegel, Concurrent's Chairman of the Board, President and Chief
Executive Officer. "We're looking forward to working with Scientific-Atlanta and directly
applying our experience from related markets to interactive video-on-demand for cable
subscribers."

Four things have fallen into place to make video-on-demand a commercially- viable service
for cable operators in 1998:

-- Server prices have dropped to affordable levels.
-- Scientific-Atlanta, in three generations of video-on-demand trials
with cable operators, has nurtured the technology to maturity and is
now ready to deploy its fourth generation of video-on-demand.
-- This year also marks the first time advanced digital set-tops have
been available for deployment at a cost-effective price.
-- Today's video-on-demand architecture eliminates some costly components
used in trials, such as ATM switches, which have now been replaced by
more intelligent, OpenCable-based 256 QAM modulators.
