And having said all of the above..... Remember that for many Latin Americans, Asians, and Africans, 'part' of the doom and gloom scenarios that have been described in various books and thesis of the "prophets of doom", became harsh reality for them. Thanks to the courtesy of their own rulers. At the same time, ironically, such disasters, prove that "life goes on" and humans adapt and eventually improve on the disaster situation, and never (luckily for us all), the proverbial "end of world" event. As Henry said, we are lucky to have a ringside seat for the coming show. The key is to identify where is the "ringside seat" as opposed to be in the middle of the ring itself.... Once again I will refer to the words of HL Mencken to describe how lucky we are, living where we live: "We live in a land of abounding quackeries, and if we do not learn how to laugh we succumb to the melancholy disease which afflicts the race of viewers-with-alarm... In no other country known to me is life as safe and agreeable, taking one day with another, as it is in These States. Even in a great Depression few if any starve, and even in a great war the number who suffer by it is vastly surpassed by the number who fatten on it and enjoy it. Thus my view of my country is predominantly tolerant and amiable. I do not believe in democracy, but I am perfectly willing to admit that it provides the only really amusing form of government ever endured by mankind." It is a matter of viewing things as "the half full glass"..... In addition, it seems that slowly each time there is one of theses mini-disasters, (from our perspective), things actually improve, for those involved, albeit with some pain as the process is executed.
