The browser let's you view and manipulate what the OS has connected you to. Much like a word processor.

The browser displays the data based on codes it interprets but does not allow modification. In this aspect it's more like a glorified ANSI.SYS driver than a word processor.

Well Junior: We could further impress others with a knowledge of the arcane by discussing the bios and other machine language operatives at the heart of an OS but suffice it to say that a browser is really an interpreter that interprets HTML and Java on the fly and without it one cannot read the code of the net as presented in the lingua franca of the web. The read write function of the disk driver does much the same thing except it does it at a lower level of coding. Much the same can be said for scanner input drivers as well as modem drivers and printer drivers. These things bring the outside world to the computer and allow the cpu to do what it will with the info. Actually a browser is not like a wp. An application like PageView or any other HTML code generator is the wp equivalent of the web world. I am glad you have decided what the legitimate functions of a computer's OS are. It kind of reminds me of the once head of the US patent office who said there is nothing left to be invented.
