partly OT, re. Dell:

they seem to be pulling ahead of the pack. They are the only boxmaker who is increasing market share, and increasing profits. That's the key sign of success in a commodity industry. Several others seem to be comfortable with using hardware as a loss-leader, and just making profits on service or software. If you're saddled with a dealer network, then you can't adopt
Dell's model. And if you don't adopt Dell's model, you won't be the low-cost producer. No way out of that double-bind. Dell's model also includes exclusive use of Intel's top-of-the-line chip, and they have given no hint of any wavering from that position. If sub-1000 (or sub-500) boxes using cheap non-Intel chips are the wave of the future, then how come Dell is doing so well?
