Eric,
I said its a commodity as a base platform for the apps. That means if you are a baan shop, and you have orcl as a dbms, vs. ifmx you see no real difference as a user - the apps vendors do this intentionally. Of course your IS shop probably has a preference, but my guess is thats largely cost driven.

Otoh if you are a shop that uses a dbms to develop some unique core technology product (vs. just run a big app), then you are more likely to see some differentiation. You might choose orcl 8 on the basis of its multimedia capabilities or tools etc. Cost will be less of a factor.
