TAIWAN-Industry's DVD push cautious but strong
Relatively new to the DVD player line and facing intense competition in the brand-name field, Taiwan companies are planning first to focus on the OEM channel.

Drive manufacturers here still must import most key components, such as loaders. This is a heavy cost burden, since imported parts account for up to 60 percent of the cost of a DVD player. Currently, Japanese companies control most of this supply.

Newly released drives sell for $599 to $630 each, but prices are expected to fall quickly as production ramps up and more technologies are developed domestically. At least one company expects to announce a $399 model in the third quarter, for instance.
