It looks like John Fan is trying his hand at vulture investing. Apparently, the assets acquired by Kowon were part of the former Sammi Technology & Industries Co. subsidiary of Sammi Steel [filed for bankruptcy 3/97]. Kopin isn't risking much if investment is limited to the $2M, but we don't know yet if Kowon is profitable.

Dr. Lee was previously a Manager in device wafers with Kopin and appears to be happy with the deal. Perhaps he already had this in mind when he set up the company.

The Sammi website sammigroup.com gave this list of MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS produced by Sammi Technology:

__ Photoelectric Parts :
. . . . . LED Lamp/Display (Inside & Outside)
. . . . . Opto-Coupler/Interrupter
. . . . . LED and Laser Printer Parts
. . . . . High Efficiency Laser Diodes.
__ Microwave :
. . . . . GaAs FET, HEMT, DBS & GPS parts
. . . . . GaAs MMIC and Digital IC (R&D)
__ OA Machinery :
. . . . . Fax Machines
__ Communication Machinery :
. . . . . Portable Phone Componentry

No divisions were shown; maybe there were none. The press release says "business of the GaAs optoelectronics division", but it's not clear if that includes all or some of the products listed above. Possibly Kowon could also be used to do module assembly at low cost. WT
