>>Hey, how'd I get "&amplt" and "&ampgt" to show up without mangling them?

I saw that one coming as soon as I clicked the Submit button. <g>

Okay - if we want to display a tag, such as "&ltpre&gt", we have to type the codes for Less Than ( < ) and Greater Than ( > ) to properly show the surrounding Angle Brackets. But, you ask, how do we actually show a user the Greater Than sign consists of the code "&ampgt", when actually typing "&ampgt" results in them seeing ">"? I'm glad you asked! <ggg>

There is a code to display an ampersand - "&ampamp". Therefore, one simply needs to enter the text string "&ampamplt" to have it display as "&amplt", which results in showing the code for "&lt", or the Less Than symbol.

Clear as wallowing mud, you old Sow?!
