On the other hand, if the chip is a G4 with AltiVec, it seems likely that Gateway would want to be a Mac cloner as well (if possible!?) and that would help boost PPC volume. The current AmigaOS runs on Motorola 68000.

Funny you should mention this. I remember three years ago or so that Gateway reportedly wanted to be a Mac clone maker, but then CEO Michael Spindler nixed the idea because he didn't want a company of Gateway's size competing with Apple. Given what Steve Jobs did to the cloners later and why, this was probably a wise choice. One of only a few "wise" decisions Spindler will be remembered for, certainly.

Guess we'll have to see how the ol' Amiga stacks up if and when new machines finally roll out. You're right about the vigor with which Amiga supporters ballyhoo their platform. Quite a good OS from what I hear, just didn't have the marketing support from Commodore to make it fly.
