Top Five Graphics Boards

There's been no love lost between Diamond Multimedia and Creative Labs, and here's a
major reason why: According to market-research firm PC Data, Diamond Multimedia had
the number-one-selling graphics card--the Voodoo 2-powered Monster 3D II with 8MB
of memory--in April. Creative Labs, however, owned the number two, three, and five
spots.
Creative's 8MB 3D Blaster Voodoo II held the number two position, with the company's
12MB 3D Blaster Voodoo II taking third place. With all the fuss that's been made about
gamers not being interested in 8MB Voodoo 2 boards, it's interesting to see that both
Diamond's and Creative's 8MB SKUs are outselling Creative's 12MB SKU. Diamond
didn't start shipping a 12MB SKU until early May, but you have to wonder how many
sales it missed out on by not having one earlier.
In terms of market share, Diamond maintains a commanding lead with 36.3 percent of the
market, compared to Creative Labs' 22.7 percent share. Matrox, which had the number
four best-selling graphics card with the Mystique 220 Consumer (selling for an average
price of $103), maintained a 12.1 percent share of the market. ATI Technologies and STB
Systems rounded out the top five with a market share of roughly seven percent each.
Given Creative's success in penetrating Diamond's strong position in the graphics
market, we'd love to know how well Diamond is doing in the sound card market;
unfortunately, PC Data is not yet tracking those sales.
