Gee, I'm the wrong guy to post to as I hate options.

Here's some sites on options.

optionstrategist.com
cyberramp.net
e-analytics.com
pmpublishing.com
site-by-site.com

Trades of 3000 may make a difference on thinly traded options .... probably not too much on heavily traded options. More often than not, such trades are a hedge. The first URL is run by Larry McMillan. McMillan keeps close track of unusual option activity.

The activity you speak of may or may not mean anything depending on the stock and it's usual volume/volatility.

The relatively low OI that you speak of (500) relative to the trade of 3000 implies there is unusual activity. However, this is not always an indication that something is afoot.

One other thing about that option trade of 3000:

It was only one trade. This further substantiate the likelihood of it being a hedge. More speculative trading would show several trades.
