Executive Day Description / June 22, 1998
This next generation YEAR 2000 Symposium has been specially designed to offer a program that benefits executives, managers and practitioners. To that end, BrainStorm Group's Board of Governors has crafted a one-day executive program and a three-day series of in-depth workshops.
The Executive Day, presented on June 22, is geared at placing a seemingly technical problem in a much broader strategic, economic and legal perspective. James D. Robinson III will discuss the responsibilities of senior management and their role in the implementation of solutions for Y2K. Dr. Richard Lindsey will discuss whether the securities industry is complying with the expectations of the SEC in preparation for the Year 2000 computer problem.
Economist Dr. Edward Yardeni offers a look at the Year 2000's potential to cause a worldwide economic recession in two years. Executives gain insight into federal government prospectives from U.S. Congresswoman Constance A. Morella (R-MD) who is Chairwoman of the subcommittee that is actively monitoring Year 2000 progress in the Federal Government.
Year 2000 Legal Session Leading Year 2000 legal experts from around the country, under the direction of Steven. L. Hock, arm you with the practical information needed to manage a wide range of Year 2000 legal risks. Attend our Moot Court, a live enactment of a hypothetical "Year 2000 trial", to experience the unpleasant Courtroom scenario unprepared companies are likely to face. Legal presentations and panel discussions outline officer and director liability, electronic supply chain liability, contractual protections, infringement of intellectual property rights, insurance coverage, document retention policies and integrating legal support as part of the project effort. The Year 2000 Legal session resumes after lunch, focusing on Year 2000 securities filings, the latest tax treatment strategies and regulatory requirements.
Panel of Experts: Executive attendees will, over the course of the day, gain a level of understanding of the broad economic, strategic and investment impacts of the Year 2000 problem. With improved understanding come more questions. Our panel of experts will address your questions and help bring solutions into focus. Chaired by Ian S. Hayes, leading Year 2000 expert, the panel includes:
Ian Hayes--President, Clarity Consulting Inc. Steven L. Hock--Chief Executive Officer, Triaxsys Research Kevin Schick--Director, AnswerThink William M. Ulrich, President, Tactical Strategy Group, Inc. Stephanie T. Moore--Senior Year 2000 Analyst, Giga Information Group

Workshops Day 2 / June 23, 1998
Remediation Techniques Seminar Year 2000 Remediation Technologies and Methodologies Marilyn Frankel Principal Consultant, Edge Information Group
In order for organizations to be ready for the Year 2000, they must learn new technologies and methodologies. The tools and processes that have been used for routine maintenance aren't sufficient for a Year 2000 project.
This workshop presents an overall framework for understanding, evaluating and selecting appropriate solutions for your organization. Topics will include how Year 2000 differs from routine maintenance, how to develop a reasonable inventory, how much and what kind of impact analysis is right for your needs. You will also hear the rationale for doing expansion, windowing or a mixture of both? When might encapsulation be a viable solution. All flavors of conversion and bridging will be discussed, including the benefits of each, so you can decide what is right for your organization.
The concepts and issues described here will be platform independent, but specific tools and system software examples will be primarily IBM mainframe related.
Remediation and Testing Tools Seminar Nanda Nandkishore President, Millennium Consulting
Remediation tools have evolved significantly over the last two years. There are more solutions for more platforms than ever before. But should you look at windowing, date field expansion, a combination of the two? Automation levels, reporting, code quality and reliability are all considerations. Repeatable and highly efficient testing cannot be accomplished without supporting tools. Unfortunately, many shops have not researched, obtained or deployed required testing tools to date. This session discusses tools that support specific functions within the remediation processes including configuration management, issue tracking, impact analysis and repository management. Furthermore this session will examine test case development, test planning, test tracking, test data generation for regression testing, data aging coverage, test results comparison/validation, test coverage and baseline comparison.
This session will review the various Year 2000 tools and provide comparative information about them. A few selected vendors will also be demonstrated. The emphasis in this session will be on tools that can be used by customer's programmers at the customer's site.
Mid-Range Systems Solutions Seminar Ann Coffou Managing Director, Giga Information Group
The majority of organizations have started some Year 2000 solution effort, but have focused only on their mainframe applications. What about the applications running on DEC, AS/400, Data General, HP, Prime, and numerous other mid-range platforms? In many cases, their systems contain non-compliant operating systems and application software, as well as non-compliant hardware. Many organizations plan to replace these systems, but they could be running out of time.
If you own any mid-range systems that may be located at central or remote sites, you could be at severe risk of Year 2000 failure. Join us in this session as we explore Year 2000, issues, options and solution possibilities for mid-range computer applications.
Manufacturing Seminar (Day 2 & 3) Learn How the Companies Making, Distributing and Selling Products Are Tackling the Year 2000 Problem Craig Dillon President of MSCi, Manufacturing & Systems Consulting, Inc. with Executive Overview by Ian Hayes, President of Clarity Consulting, Inc.
Manufacturing companies in their supply chain partners face a Year 2000 challenge that will profoundly affect their individual and collective future success. Companies that make, distribute or sell products must not only deal effectively with their own IT and embedded systems, but must also worry about the compliance of their supply chain partners, and the other entities that provide supporting services. Companies in the manufacturing industry are particularly vulnerable to supply chain breakdowns with the potential to wreak havoc on their businesses.
This is the first Y2K symposium sponsored by APICS. It was designed by manufacturing industry executives and consultants to dispense practical, useful information to manufacturing organizations. Featured speakers include representatives from Union Pacific, Toyota and other major US and multinational manufacturing organizations.
The Manufacturing Seminar will take place over two days and will include presentations and panel discussions on the following sample topics:
Managing the Manufacturing Year 2000 Project Office Year 2000 Supply Chain Issues Investigating Year 2000 Compliance on the Shop Floor Triage for a Year 2000 Project And presentations by individual manufacturing organizations on the special Year 2000 issues faced at their sites and the approaches used to handle them.
Who should attend: The Manufacturing Seminar has been designed for executives, managers, business professionals and senior IT personnel from product manufacturing, distribution and supply chain companies. This target audience has a critical need to understand the spectrum of Year 2000 issues facing their company and the potential impact of Year 2000 failures on their business. Go to top
Workshops Day 3 / June 24, 1998
Testing Techniques Seminar Year 2000 Testing, Date Simulators & Time Machines Carl Gehr Principal Consultant, Edge Information Group
It may seem like Mission Impossible; but it's just the challenge of testing your Year 2000 implementation and it could consume over 50% of your Y2K effort. In addition to making sure you have covered all your systems and applications, you have to be sure that you are not missing something critical because you are using the wrong technique, the wrong platform, or you are missing some critical interface. There are two major approaches to Y2K testing; both have their place and, for most shops, both will be used. This session will address the "how, what and where" of Y2K testing; and will compare the use of system date simulators with stand-alone time machines, when each is applicable and why you will want to use both for your Year 2000 testing.
The concepts and issues described here will be platform independent, but specific tools and system software examples will be primarily IBM mainframe related.
Conversion Solutions Seminar H Husmann President, Synchronized Solutions
A wide variety of conversion solutions are available to your organization. Several of the alternatives, if managed properly, will deliver satisfactory results. However, with every strategy, there are trade-offs, compromises, and "opportunities". This seminar will discuss various solution options, their critical components, and the advantages and disadvantages of each within a risk-based framework. The session will discuss Solution Strategies; Analysis, Planning, Remediation, Testing, and Implementation phases; Building your Assembly Line; Inhouse Conversions; Factory Conversions-On & Off Shore; Mixed approaches; and Managing the Work.
Manufacturing Seminar (Continued) See Day 2 for more information.
PC and Desktop Seminar Karl Feilder CEO & Founder, Greenwich Mean Time
Karl Feilder is the world authority on the Year 2000 problem and its affects on PCs and networks. This presentation will cover in some depth the following areas; what is the problem with PCs the four areas of concern namely, hardware, operating system, application and end-user data. Assessing the risk to the organization methodology for defining the problems and fixing them. The network-what are the problems with the networking equipment and where are they likely to occur on the LAN and WAN what you can do to minimize the risk to your company's network. Karl will illustrate his presentation with practical examples of the problems that can occur on PCs and across networks. He will go into some technical depth on the areas of concern with networking equipment and look at the development of the networking protocols which have contributed to date issues.
Risk Management and Contingency Planning William M. Ulrich President, Tactical Strategy Group, Inc.
As the Year 2000 nears, organizations must insulate themselves from numerous risks stemming from system compliance errors, data corruption and third party failures. Risk analysis, contingency planning and crisis management are needed to maintain operational integrity in the face of these challenges. To achieve this, management must launch a risk management program that can be used to maintain project sponsorship, engage business unit stakeholders in the solution, drive project prioritization, outline a broad range of contingency options and prepare the organization to address the many issues that will arise as the Year 2000 arrives. This session includes:
Shifting the emphasis to Year 2000 risk mitigation Risk assessment and risk management strategies Interactive development of a Year 2000 business risk model Contingency planning and triage invocation options Crisis management strategies for the Year 2000 transition window

Banking Seminar Howard Adams Vice President of Operations, Productivity Solutions, Inc.
Sessions providing you with prudent information and practical tactics to deal with the ever increasing regulations, legal issues, credit risks and supply chain threats within the banking industry.
There are many common year 2000 problems and issues for any business but few industries are effected as much as the banking industry. Banks rely on systems which are interconnected throughout their business partners and customers just as much as their own internal systems. This session puts into perspective some of the major year 2000 challenges facing banks today.
The Latest Legal and Regulatory Topics Leading experts will discuss how the many regulators are responding to the Year 2000 and what they foresee coming in the future. Another growing concern to be discussed is what steps are considered prudent for Board members, Executives and Officers of a bank to minimize the threat of future litigation.
Contingent Threats The large efforts to remediate internal systems has delayed banks in addressing the many problems resulting from external systems and businesses not adequately addressing the Year 2000. Now is the time to address such threats, e.g. electronic supply chains, extending credit to non-compliant business customers, and community banks.
Audience Driven Panel Discussions Many banks rely on purchased software packages to sustain their business. Will these packages be year 2000 compliant? By what means and when? Will these revisions be included in maintenance costs or require an upgrade? These are just some of the topics to be discussed by our panel of leading software vendors who are prominent throughout the banking industry.
Take Notes! Because you will be given an opportunity to bring up topics and ask questions of the speakers and other experts heard throughout the day. This track is for your benefit so don't hesitate to get involved and get better prepared for the Year 2000. We're counting on you (in more than one way)
Who Should Attend: Board of Directors, CEO, CFO, COO, CIO, and executives who will be held accountable by shareholders, customers and regulators for failure to take prudent actions to minimize the banks' exposure to the year 2000. General Counsels, Auditors, Business Analysts, and others who need to thoroughly understand the challenges and required contributions associated with the year 2000. |
