Shash: That would reduce the gyroscopic effect by 60% or more, which might be sufficient to make it negligible.

Mark: Gyroscopic effects cannot be eliminated by balancing. They might be eliminated by incorporating a mass moment of inertia that rotates opposite to the primary mass, but this would be very expensive.

Shash: The only illustration I've seen is the one in the Shelby press release. Are these the drawings you've been alluding to in your posts?

The limiting factor in the engine is probably the combustion process. A piston speed of 4900 ft/min probably approaches the speed of sound in the combustion chamber (depending on the pressure and gas composition). The combustion wave front will begin to be saturated by the speed of the piston at some point.

Another limiting factor would be the temperature of the cylinder block. Since the block rotates inside the housing the heat must be transferred through the oil film to the outside housing, whereas in the conventional non-liquid cooled IC engine (e.g. a motorcycle engine), the cylinder walls are directly in contact with the external environment and fins are added to raise the heat transfer efficiency.
