Michael Gale of IntelliQuest, an Austin research firm, said Dell will keep the pressure on the other large computer makers based on IntelliQuest's surveys of purchasing plans among large corporations.

"I would be very worried if I were Compaq," Gale said. "We may see Dell as the No. 1 vendor to large accounts in the U.S., and maybe globally, by late this year."
