You can't always rely on real-time news. There are many vendors, and news can be distributed unevenly among them. Sometimes I get faxes directly from small-cap companies with news releases, which can take an hour or more to show up on a news wire.

So you might be trading on news that is already known to some. The only solution is to subscribe to multiple news feeds (Reuters, Dow Jones, etc.) but that can get kind of expensive, and even that doesn't always work.

There is a Level II thread here on SI.

Level II usually shows a mm with 1k shares at the bid or
offer. BUT they may have a lot of 1k share lots!
The nasdaq is currently testing a few stocks requiring mm's
to show the exact amount of shares, rather than just hiding behind
1k.
