I believe that DFR was a bit different. They were different times. Mining stocks were a positive concept back then.

The DFR play seemed to be ignored for a long time then an orebody came along. The stock and everything about the play had and orebody ("defined" in the very early stages <6-8mo) to buffer future results. The speculative edge was removed somewhat. The speculation seemed to come later on when everyone wondered who was going to buy it or how desperate INCO was.

BTW I cannot remember a >40% drop over any period in the mid stages ($6.00+) of the play. Charts are hard to come by but I believe I have some in my office.
