Indonesia President Suharto Resigns

.c The Associated Press

JAKARTA, Indonesia (May 20) - Indonesian President Suharto announced his resignation in a nationwide television address Thursday morning, ending his 32 years as head of the world's fourth most-populous nation. The resignation is effective immediately.

Vice President Baharuddin Jusuf Habibie was immediately sworn in as the new president of the nation, which has been wracked by violence and economic troubles.

Immediately after the swearing-in, Gen. Wiranto, the armed forces commander, said the army supports the transition of power from Suharto to Habibie.

Gen. Wiranto asked the Indonesian people to remain calm.

''The armed forces will take part in preventing any irregularities ... that could threaten the nation,'' Wiranto said in a nationwide address. That was a reference to the armed forces' determination to prevent another outbreak of violence.
