Gentlemen ,

From my Dec. 30th post the following: <<In Indonesia Suharto will retire. The transition will be orderly however.>>

I hope the latter part of that prediction becomes more accurate then it has been. While this has all the earmarks of a managed transition it is not at all clear the events forward will be. Never has a country been so in need of support. For one I would like to see an immediate initiative on debt restructuring and a moratorium on key industry debt. We will have a de facto moratorium in any case. Time for a significant show of support IMO.

By the way, lest you all think I am tooting a horn, the statement above was the most accurate of several predictions I made in that post. Just luck. I also stated that high tech stocks had already discounted most of the bad news and warranted investment. A prediction I have had to revise several times since then.

best,
Stitch

If the resignation of Suharto proves to be the turning point for the SE Asian economies
(their bourses are doing their darndest to support that concept tonight), then it may also
prove to be the turning point in our stock market away from the megacaps, S&P 500,
the "new nifty 50", etc. and back into the techs including the semis. Our economy will
start to heat further as the recovering Asians buy more, plus gradual removal of the
disinflation forces of cheap imports will force AG to raise rates. Also, less liquidity will
leave SEA for our markets.
Just wishful thinking on my part.

Ceausescu's fate-A befitting retirement gift for Suharto.

Here I was happy to hear that the Old Fool was gone for good then I saw the 'fine print' which said Habibie. What a joke! Suharto rules by Proxy.

If Indonesian's are smart they should give him a retirement present Ceausescu [Romania] style. Now that will be a worthy departing gift for him,his family and buddies.

I don't think this is the end of the story, stay tuned!
