Aureal's technology relies heavily on CPU resources, in order to provide an inexpensive solution.

This is an approach that has been all-but-abandoned by Intel, which first promoted the MMX architecture as a means of getting this type of cost reduction by relying heavily on the CPU.

I simply do not beleive that this is what buyers want. They want their CPU to be offloaded for performing important tasks - not to be tied-up pumping out audio, emulating a modem, etc. etc.

Note how video display cards continue to be propelled in the direction of greater and greater performance. Nobody is suggesting that the CPU should do more work to give us cheaper video display cards.

The same applies to audio.
