The economic reality of it is that an operating system is whatever the consumer decides to purchase as an OS.

Ah, the ham sandwich defense. Kind of like the twinkie defense, except that it only involves a middle finger, not a gun.


You know what? I'd accept this as a legitimate defense of IE except for one thing: Microsoft marketed the browser separately as well.
If Microsoft hadn't made IE for all the other operating systems, handn't distributed it on CDs, hadn't marketed it to all the OLS and ISPs, hadn't tracked it as a product internally and talked about market share, hadn't advertised it as a product available on the web, then yeah, I agree, maybe it would be JUST part of the OS.
