Bay Networks Dominates New Layer 3 Switching Market; Pioneer of Routing Switches Leads in Port Shipments and Market Share SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 21, 1998--Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE:BAY), the pioneer in routing switch technology, is the number one provider of Layer 3 routing switches according to a study just released by market research firm the Dell'Oro Group. The report shows that Bay Networks is the clear market leader with number one positions in this rapidly growing technology segment, capturing 38 percent of Layer 3 routing switch revenues and 34 percent of ports shipped in the first quarter of CY98. Layer 3 routing switches eliminate the performance and cost penalties associated with routed networks by eliminating bottlenecks and simplifying network design. In its most recent report, the Dell'Oro Group, for the first time, segmented Layer 3 switching as a separate market category from the overall Ethernet Switching market, indicating growing customer acceptance of this technology. Bay Networks holds an early leadership position in the Layer 3 routing switch market, which according to market analyst firm IDC, is projected to be $5 billion by the year 2001. "First quarter shipments of the Accelar routing switch product family broke all records as the most successful introduction of any new product family in Bay Networks' history," said Dave Shrigley, executive vice president of marketing, sales and service for Bay Networks. "The market's response to our efforts of establishing Layer 3 as a separate market category and of positioning Bay Networks as the leader in this new segment of the Ethernet switching market has been tremendous. We are very optimistic about maintaining and growing our position as a leader in this important market as we continue to drive innovation and technology advances." Bay Networks' Accelar routing switches are being deployed across many industry segments, in networks ranging in size from thousands of globally connected nodes to small, single-location networks. This broad acceptance demonstrates how Accelar routing switch customers benefit from increased performance, lower overall system costs and increased flexibility, resiliency and scalability in their networks. According to the Dell'Oro report, Bay Networks also holds the number one position in: -0- *T -- Layer 3 Switched Fast Ethernet with 44 percent revenue and 36 percent port share; -- Modular Layer 3 Switched Fast Ethernet with 52 percent revenue and 50 percent port share. *T In addition, Bay Networks captured 19 percent revenue and port share in the modular Layer 3 Switched Gigabit Ethernet market, according to the report. Since shipping began late last year, Bay Networks' Accelar routing switches have been purchased by customers in diverse markets including healthcare, manufacturing, retail, government, service providers, food and beverage, financial and pharmaceuticals. "Bay Networks was able to address my concerns about scalability with a product that includes leading-edge technology," said John Warren, IT operations manager for Champion Road Machinery, one of the world's premiere manufacturers of road construction equipment. "The Accelar 1200 capacity gives us the bandwidth we need, plus maximum protection for future scalability."
