What innovations are not in windows that would be used by a majority of consumers? I think that windows does what most people need it to do to perform what most people use a computer for. Life is more than spreadsheets and email. (well not for me, but for most people) If the monopoly becomes overly complacent, it will meet the better mousetrap in a dark alley of the future. But if it continues to be responsive to most peoples needs it will continue to exist.

Unless it can be proven that MSFT has used illegal strong arm tactics to maintain its positions I think we have to let nature take its course.

I would agree with you regarding monopolies in the past, and perhaps some markets today, but not in computer software.

There is no way that Microsoft can keep me from producing a product and releasing that product worldwide. The Internet, and instant communications make this possible. Perhaps the Monopoly Market model existed in the past, but IMHO, it does not in todays software market.

the Monopoly leaches its free ride
Presuming you think MSFT is a monopoly, where has it "leached" anything? It has provided product for those who wish to purchase. Nothing more, nothing less. It has leached nothing. Quite the contrary, it has been leached from by our government.
