Jane, quite a while ago we were talking about languages. I just had this url pointed out to me sil.org - incredible site, very extensive. Much of what I thought I knew about the languages of M‚xico is wrong according to these people sil.org Two and a half years ago in Ocosingo I heard that Chiapaneco was completely extinct and had been for some time. This is not a Mayan derivative, but has its roots to the south. Well, these people say differently "CHIAPANECO [CIP] 150 in Mexico, including 17 speakers out of 32 population in Chiapas (1990 census). State of Chiapas, El Bosque (2), Las Margaritas (2), Ocosingo (4), Palenque (2), Sabanilla (7) municipios. Oto-Manguean, Chiapanec-Mangue. Reported to be quite similar to Chorotega of Costa Rica and El Salvador. Nearly extinct." I'm very curious as to who's right ... will print and send this down there.
