<< 3) AT&T offers a service similar to Qwest's service - negative >>

all that happened is AT&T made overtures to the Bells and GTE. the questions are:

can AT&T truly compete with QWST on price? i have doubts... their overhead is so much higher.

can AT&T afford to undercut themselves? if AT&T offers a QWST-like plan, any current AT&T residential customer who can do math would switch over resulting in mucho lost revenue. AT&T can't say "this is for new customers only" and force current customers to pay more.

Armstrong said that AT&T would compete on the strength of its brand. QWST says "price is everything." if US West's early results are any indicator (over 50,000 subscribers in the first 10 days), QWST has the incumbent IXCs over a barrel.

The sector isn't hot today. It will come back up to at least open today.
