Your point is absolutely correct. The larger picture, of course, is that decreasing costs is a hallmark of technology. It's too easy to get caught up in the numbers game and lose sight of the larger picture. The larger picture is that by decreasing the costs of technology the benefits of that technology become available to increasing numbers of people, and as a result, total profits rise. That's really the key -- total profits. Not profit per unit.

I certainly hate to quibble with Michael Dell, but pricing decisions are (or should be) the result of long-term profit maximization considerations (and costs are certainly a key component of that calculus). This is probably what he meant.
